Current Lake Conditions and Water Treatment

Our lake, which serves as our drinking water source, is currently experiencing ongoing algae blooms and algae die-offs. If you visit the shoreline, you may notice visible algae, along with earthy or musty odors associated with these natural conditions. These are the same source water conditions our treatment plant is managing daily.

Unfortunately, this month has brought some of the most challenging water quality conditions we have experienced. We understand the concerns customers have expressed and want to assure you that protecting your health and safety remains our highest priority.

Although these conditions make treatment more difficult, all drinking water produced by our treatment plant continues to be rigorously tested and monitored to ensure it meets California's drinking water standards. Your water is safe to drink, cook with, bathe in, and use for all everyday household purposes. Our staff is also working closely with the California State Water Resources Control Board as we respond to these conditions.

To help maintain the highest possible water quality, we are:

  • Collaborating with neighboring water utilities experiencing similar conditions to share information, strategies, and best practices.
  • Replacing activated carbon filtration media more frequently than our normal maintenance schedule to maximize treatment effectiveness.
  • Flushing hydrants throughout the distribution system as often as possible to improve water quality.

Why conditions may take time to improve

Our water system has a large storage capacity, which provides important reliability for our customers. However, this also means that water takes longer to move from our storage tanks through the distribution system. As a result, improvements made during treatment and system flushing may take more time to reach all areas of the system.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as our staff continue working diligently to manage these unusually difficult conditions. We will continue to monitor water quality closely and provide updates as conditions change. Thank you for your continued trust as we work to provide safe, reliable drinking water to our community.
